Next Birmingham Manager Could Be Steve Cotterill Or Billy Davies

On Sunday night there was a shock for Birmingham with Alex McLeish, who won the Carling Cup just a few months ago, resigning from his job by email. On the same day Nottingham Forest sacked Billy Davies and he became the early favourite to replace McLeish although Steve Cotterill has quickly emerged as the leading contender.

Billy Davies was a short priced favourite early on but quickly drifted when the interest in Steve Cotterill emerged and it could no be between the pair. Billy Davies has a solid record in the Championship and of course got Derby promoted to the Premiership a few years back, Birmingham would know exactly what they are getting with Billy Davies and he could be a decent appointment. Steve Cotterill perhaps represents a bit more of a risk, he has some great successes on his CV but also has a couple of failures, he still looks quite an underrated manager though and he is capable of guiding Birmingham back to the Premiership.

After the favoruites there are the usual suspects, Alan Curbishley is always one of the contenders for a job like this but he seems to be very much taking his time and could well be waiting for another job in London. Chris Hughton surprisingly hasn't been snapped up yet, he took Newcastle back up at the first time of asking and he is surely in the thoughts of the Birmingham board at the moment, he could yet prove good value in the Next Birmingham Manager Odds.

Roberto Di Matteo is another who has gained promotion from the Championship and his brand of football would surely go down well at Birmingham, whether or not his affiliations with West Brom would is another question. Di Matteo is a more likely contender than the likes of Aidy Boothroyd and Ian Holloway according to the bookies' odds.

Recommendation: BACK CHRIS HUGHTON TO BE NEXT BIRMINGHAM MANAGER
