Man Utd gained the most points in the 10/11 Premiership season against top half opposition, picking up 33 points. The season before they were only the second best team against top half opposition but again picked up 33 points and clearly Man Utd should be supported with confidence against the better sides in the Premiership.
Everyone knows Man Utd have plenty of firepower but their ability to score (and concede) goals when playing away from home might still be a little underestimated. In both the 10/11 season and the 09/10 season 8 of Man Utd’s 19 away matches had over 3.5 goals. That may be less than half but the odds on over 3.5 goals are often quite large and a bet on over 3.5 goals should certainly be contemplated when Man Utd are playing away from home against side’s who score or concede plenty at home.
Man Utd are obviously one of the best backed teams each week in the Premiership but caution should be advised if betting on the half time or half time/full time markets when Man Utd are playing away from home. In the 10/11 Premiership season Man Utd were winning just 4 away games at half time (10 draws and 5 losses) whilst in the 09/10 Premiership season Man Utd were winning just 6 away games at half time (10 draws and 3 losses). Most punters will still be backed Man Utd to be winning at half time but the smart money suggests that when away, Man Utd are most likely to be drawing their games at half time.
Nani proved an important player for Man Utd in the 10/11 Premiership season, not only providing his team with 9 goals but also a huge 18 assists, expect the number of goals Man Utd score to go down whenever Nani doesn’t play for Man Utd. Nani’s scoring record wasn’t as impressive the previous season with just three goals but he set up 11 goals that season proving if Nani doesn’t play, United are likely to get less chances.
In the 10/11 Premiership season Dimitar Berbatov scored 16 goals at home from 12 starts and 2 sub appearances, Wayne Rooney scored just 4 from 12 starts and 3 sub appearances. On the road in the same season Berbatov scored just 4 goals from 12 starts and 6 sub appearances whilst Wayne Rooney scored 7 in just 13 starts. Berbatov should be supported to score at anytime in home matches when he plays (whilst Rooney should be avoided at short odds) whilst for away matches Rooney looks a very good bet to score and it is Berbatov who should be avoided.
Man City v Man Utd - This game has a habit of throwing up some very low scoring games. In the five league meetings where Man City were at home between 2007 and 2010 four games finished 1-0 (three in Man Utd's favour, one in Man city's favour) and the other game finished 0-0. Under 2.5 goals should be amongst the bets strongly considered when this fixture is played at Eastlands.
Man Utd v Spurs – These two teams are consistently near the top of the fair play league, in the 10/11 Premiership season Man Utd were 5th in the Fair Play League whilst Spurs were 3rd. The previous season it was a similar story with Man Utd being 3rd in the Fair Play League and Spurs came 5th. In games between the two sides it should pay to bet on there being fewer cards than usual.
Man Utd v Fulham - These two teams are consistently near the top of the fair play league, in the 10/11 Premiership season Man Utd were 5th in the Fair Play League whilst Fulham were 2nd. The previous season it was a similar story with Man Utd being 3rd in the Fair Play League and Fulham came 1st. In games between the two sides it should pay to bet on there being fewer cards than usual.
